From Country House Catholicism to City Church – a new publication from the Oxfordshire Record Society

From Country House Catholicism to City Church: the Registers of the Oxford Catholic Mission 1700-1875‘ has just been published by the Oxfordshire Record Society.

These registers, compiled by the Jesuits, are now held in Oxford at St Aloysius, which is now the home of the Oxford Oratory. They have been edited by Tony Hadland. They show the development of the Catholic church in England from penal times to a time when it was legal for the church to build churches where they were needed, even though there was still considerable prejudice among the general public.

The book can be purchased from publishers with a current discount of 35% on the publication price of £35. Further information is set out in a flyer which can be viewed on this link.

Death of Fr Antony de Vere

I am sorry to let you know that Fr Anthony died last week. The following is the message I received from his son Mark:

I am writing with the sad news that Anthony passed away this week. He received last rites at home, during which he was clear and present; he died peacefully, shortly afterwards.

The Requiem will be held on this Friday 13th, at 1pm, at Corpus Christi Church, Headington, OX3 8AJ (at the corner of Wharton Road and Margaret Road). A reception will follow in the Church Hall.
Vespers for the Dead will be said on Thursday 12th evening at 7pm, with a small reception to follow.

Funeral of Michael Hodgetts

The funeral Mass for Michael Hodgetts will take place at St Chad’s cathedral on Thursday 12 January at 11.00 a.m.

Everyone is welcome but it would be helpful if you let me know if you are intending to come; I can let Michael’s family have some idea of the numbers they will need to cater for at the reception in the Grimshaw Room after Mass.

If you intend to come please let me know by email: vburke44@blueyonder.co.uk

Thank you,
Vincent Burke
